Steamed Apples

Steamed apples are sometimes added to our dog’s breakfast together with oats for a variation from sweet potatoes.

Apples contain calcium, vitamin K, and are a good source of vitamin C and dietary fiber as well as LOW in saturated fat and sodium.  Saturated fat contributes to heart problems.  Apples contain omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which contribute to a healthy, glossy coat and help to control skin allergies.

Most of the calories in apples come from naturally occurring sugar, although not processed sugar that might be found in other treats, still, sugar is sugar, so do note that it can contribute to weight gain if taken in LARGE quantities.

The seeds of the apples contain a substance called cyanogenic glycosides which can cause cyanide poisoning if ingested.  However, you can rest assured that they are carefully removed before cooking.

The apples are cut and steamed instead of boiled so the taste n nutrients do not go to the water.  They are then cooled and packed into zip-lock bags for freezing.  Using zip-lock bags not only preserves the freshness but also makes thawing easier.

It is recommended to be consumed within 2-3 weeks to ensure freshness.
Defrost, microwave or steam it and serve.  It can be served cool, at room temperature or warm depending on your dog's preference.  If you would like, you can even give them frozen, like iced apples treats!  =D

Steamed Sweet Potatoes

We usually give steamed sweet potatoes to our dog as breakfast together with oats, not every day as we always give a variation so he doesn’t get bored with the same food every day.

Sweet potatoes are commonly used as an acceptable filler source - one that normally doesn’t cause stomach upset or other digestion problems.  Sweet potatoes have much more nutrition than regular potatoes.  They're rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory nutrients, and are classified as an anti-diabetic food.  They received this title because animal studies have found that sweet potatoes help stabilize blood sugar levels and lower insulin resistance. They contain vitamin A which also protects against emphysema.  The notable Nutrients are Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Manganese, Copper, Fiber, Vitamin B6, Potassium, Iron.

Sweet potatoes are full of starch so weight-gain is a possibility if too much is fed.  Since we don’t feed our dog sweet potatoes every day, he is so far maintaining his weight well.

We only use Japanese Sweet Potatoes because they are so much tastier even though they are more expensive, and remember how much we emphasize on quality?  Our sweet potatoes are fresh and carefully peeled before cooking so you do not have to worry that the skin of the sweet potato could contain harmful chemicals if moldy.  They are also steamed instead of boiled so the taste n nutrients do not go to the water.

The sweet potatoes are cooled and packed into zip-lock bags for freezing.

Oats for Dogs

As we all know how oats are very beneficial to humans, they are also very good for dogs in many ways.   Ever heard of oatmeal shampoo n conditioner for dogs with skin problems or even bathing them with real oats or applying the oats directly on affected skin?

Today, I am going to introduce oats as food for dogs.

Oats generally helps digestion and has a natural calming effect to the body.  Some hyperactive dogs actually calm down a little after adding oats to their diet.  It also explains why oatmeal baths are recommended for dogs with itchy skin as it helps to calm the itchiness.

Did you know that oats:
* are best known as a strength-giving cereal
* are an excellent source of antioxidants
* are low in starch
* are a valuable source of minerals, including potassium and phosphorus
* have a high silicon content, making them beneficial to our dogs’ bones and teeth
* soothe the gastrointestinal and nervous systems

More importantly why we choose to give our doggie oats for breakfast daily is because oats promotes a heart-healthy dog as it helps to lower cholesterol in the dog’s body.  Oats are loaded with a soluble fiber called beta-glucan.  Beta-glucans are incredibly viscous and help to thicken the membranes of the intestines when broken down.  This thickening prevents the absorption of bile acids, which are made up of cholesterol.  If the body has no bile acids to use in digestion, it must take up the cholesterol in the blood to replenish the bile acid, therefore reducing the amount of cholesterol in the bloodstream.  Over time, enough of the cholesterol in the blood is removed to show a significant reduction or maintain healthy levels.  Low cholesterol in the bloodstream means reduced risk of heart disease.  The high fiber in oats may also contribute to colon health and act as an aid to combat constipation.  In addition to the benefits of a whole lot of fiber, these tasty grains also boast high protein levels and good sources of magnesium, iron, zinc as well as several B vitamins.  In humans, oats have also been linked to controlling blood sugar levels, which could also benefit dogs with diabetes.  Not to mention that oats are packed with selenium, a powerful antioxidant that has been linked to heart health, DNA repair and colon cancer prevention.

Some dogs prefer raw oats while some prefer cooked oats like oats porridge.  We made for our doggie porridge oats from instant oats by The Quaker, as we are also having the same for our own breakfast, hee.  It’s easy to make, just have to add hot water n mix.  And they are easily available from supermarkets.  =)

We usually give 2 to 2.5 spoonfuls of oats to our doggie for breakfast daily.  For this instant oats, we just add some hot water and stir it, then its ready.  We will always add some sweet potatoes / bananas / steamed or fresh apples / fresh blueberries, etc, to the oats together with 1-2 spoonfuls of yogurt and some supplements.  We do sell some of these foods that you can add to the oats for your dog’s breakfast (freshly prepared n put to freeze), will talk more about these in the next few posts.

Besides all the nutritional facts about oats and how beneficial are oats to dogs, the best thing is that oats are not really that expensive.  Together with what you may add to the oats for more flavour, it is still very affordable.  Do consider adding oats to your dog’s diet!  I don’t know about your dog, but ours just loves it!  =D

Broccoli Puree

With all the vitamins and nutrients found in broccoli, it is of no wonder this veggie is labelled as the most nutritious vegetable.  Broccoli contains high levels of vitamins A and C.  As Vitamin C helps in the absorption of protein, dogs that regularly consume this vegetable will fully absorb the protein from the food  Broccoli is a good source of antioxidants, which has the function of repairing damage to cells caused by the toxic substances.  The sulforaphane substance in this vegetable aids in the detoxification process.  The broccoli’s antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and detoxifying components help to eliminate free radicals in the dog’s body by lowering the risk of development of cancer and other health concerns.  The development of cancer in dogs that regularly consume broccoli is considerably reduced as this vegetable has the all important phytochemicals that can serve as a powerful cancer cell fighter.  The inclusion of broccoli in the dog’s diet promotes bladder and intestinal health of the dog because this veggie is a good source of soluble fiber.

Although broccoli is listed as one of the human foods unsafe for dogs (Don't panic!), what makes the vegetable unsafe for dogs is the isothiocyanate it contains. The toxicity of this vegetable is DOSE DEPENDENT. This highly nutritious veggie would be PERFECTLY SAFE for the dog to eat as long as the amount consumed DOES NOT exceed 10% of the dog’s total food intake for the day. The toxic substance in broccoli will cause gastric irritation if the amount ingested by the dog is more than 10% of the diet. Isothiocyanate’s effects become fatal if the amount of broccoli ingested by the dog is more than 25% of the daily food intake.

Our broccoli puree is made WITHOUT any preservatives and seasonings.  It is also blended into puree form for easier absorption and digestion.  If you are very worried about the total intake that your dog takes, you can always give half of each pack for breakfast (with oats+sweet potatoes) or dinner (with vegetables combo+meat) daily, it will add more flavour to the food, while giving the best nutrients to your dog.

The puree is packed into zip-lock bags for freezing.  Using zip-lock bags not only preserves the freshness but also makes thawing easier.

It is recommended to be consumed within 2-3 weeks to ensure freshness.

Defrost, microwave or steam it and serve.  It can be served cool, at room temperature or warm depending on your dog's preference.   ;D

Chicken

Although we do not really recommend chicken for doggies with skin problems but if you know that your dog is ok taking chicken, you can always order our chicken packs as the meat for the meal as a variation.   We use chicken fillets as they are less oily and more healthy.  They are also boneless and give a more satisfying meat-biting sensation.

Our chicken fillets are steamed with NO preservatives and seasonings added, and packed into zip-lock bags for freezing.  Using zip-lock bags not only preserves the freshness but also makes thawing easier.

Fresh Human-Grade Chicken Fillets :

One pack of Chicken is recommended to go with one pack of our vegetables combo to complete a meal.  We usually give our doggie one meal like this once in a day for dinner.  It is recommended to be consumed within 2-3 weeks to ensure freshness.

Defrost, microwave or steam it and serve.  It can be served cool, at room temperature or warm depending on your dog's preference.  ;D

Please email for pricing.

Pork

The reason why we included Pork in our menu is because we do hear of some dogs with skin problems who cannot take fish, sounds weird but we really have a friend whose fox terrier cannot take salmon.  So here we have Pork for dogs made from pork loin, which is the part that is less oily and a pretty decent part of a pig.  We tried minced pork before but it was really oily and not as good for dogs who have sensitive stomachs.  We also find that pork loin gives them more satisfaction in the meat-biting sensation, as compared to minced meat, or even fish meat.  Our pork loins are also boneless so you do not have to worry about bones piercing your dog’s intestines and all, you know how it is not as recommended to give your dogs real bones right?  Maybe have to be very selective what bones you can give but we rather not take the chance.

Fresh Human-Grade Pork Loin :

Thick and juicy!  Slurp!

Our Pork loins are steamed with NO preservatives and seasonings added, and packed into zip-lock bags for freezing.  Using zip-lock bags not only preserves the freshness but also makes thawing easier.

Tuna

We have also included Tuna Fish in our menu for people who would like to give their dogs a fish-based diet and at the same time would like some variation besides salmon, salmon and salmon.  Our tuna fish are made from premium human-grade tuna steaks.  They are steamed with NO preservatives and seasonings added, and then portioned out and packed into zip-lock bags for freezing.  Using zip-lock bags not only preserves the freshness but also makes thawing easier.

Salmon

As we all know, fish-based diets are usually recommended for dogs with skin problems and salmon is especially recommended because of its richness in nutrients and omega 3.  The salmon we used here are all human-grade boneless salmon.  It is steamed with NO preservatives and seasonings added.  They are then portioned out into about 100g each and then packed in zip-lock bags for freezing.  Using zip-lock bags not only preserves the freshness but also makes thawing easier.  You dog will love this as they are PURE salmon meat!  ;D

Vegetables Combo!

I have to admit, I also love this vegetables combo and will “steal” abit to eat whenever I cook for my doggie!  ;P  It is made of all human grade ingredients, all natural with no preservatives and seasonings added.  Best of all, it is naturally sweet n tasty!  ;D

Ingredients used are : Butternut Pumpkins, potatoes, celery, carrots and apples.

All the ingredients used are human-grade fresh ingredients, you can see from the picture below (before cooking) that the ingredients are very fresh and beautiful.

We even go to the extent of blending the carrots so that your doggies can absorb the nutrients better as well as making it easier to digest.  For those who have given your doggie carrots before will know that they usually have the carrots passed out and the poo poo will have small pieces of carrots, as though the body cannot really digest it.  Carrots are very good for the eyes because it contains the cartenoid beta-carotene (Vitamin A).

Celery is also another power food for dogs.  It is rich in calcium, potassium, phosphorus, sodium and iron, as well as vitamins A, B and C.  It is believed to be good for the nerves and an anti-tumour agent.  Celery is also a natural diuretic that stimulates urine production and can help eliminate excess fluids, thereby promoting good kidney and urinary tract health in your pet.  Our celery are also carefully shredded on the outer layer where the fibres may be too tough n not nice to chew on or swallow, just the way like how we prepare it for humans.

We do not just load up our vegetables combo with lots of potatoes as they are much cheaper and also makes your pet feels more full, instead we added pumpkins which have much more nutritional values.  If you are worried about your dog putting on weight, giving pumpkins is a good choice as it is a low-calorie / low-fat / filler that is high in fiber and will help keep your pet feeling full longer.  More importantly, it also gives your dog the required nutrients that he or she needs.  Pumpkins also have a high water and fiber content and can act to hydrate the intestines and their contents when dogs are suffering from constipation, thus it can be a very effective treatment for the occasional abnormal stool.  Pumpkin can also be used to treat diarrhoea. The soluble fiber in pumpkins actually helps absorb excess water in the bowels that the body didn’t absorb properly, thereby helping to calm diarrhoea.  We also choose to use butternut pumpkins as they are sweeter and tastier, tho they are also much more expensive than local pumpkins.  It just shows how much quality we expect in our dishes, even though they are for dogs!

Of course we still use some potatoes as potatoes are just very yummy, or at least because we are potato-lovers.  Our potatoes are freshly skinned and cooked.

As for apples, we use fresh n sweet apples, rest assured we dun get the cheapest n half-rotten apples as we emphasize on giving quality food to our doggies.  We do not peel the apples as we believe there are nutrients in the apples’ skin as well, but we do remove all the seeds and stems in the apples.

Here’s a look at the vegetables combo BEFORE cooking :

Now after its cooked, it looks even more appetising like this :

It will then be portioned out to this quantity and packed into zip-lock bags (instead of containers like in the picture) for freezing.  This portion is for one small to medium breed (mine is a Schnauzer x Scottish Terrier) for one meal.  Using zip-lock bags not only preserves the freshness but also makes thawing easier.

This is a very healthy and tasty dish.  For those who prefer to give your doggie a vegetarian diet, you can also consider giving your dog this.  You can give 2 packs of this or add some brown rice to it if you like it, or if you think it may not be filling enough for your doggie.

This vegetables combo is recommended to go with one meat product as a complete meal.  We usually give this meal once a day in the night for my doggie.  We will also recommend the meal we give our dog in the morning.  But of course if you would like you doggie to have this for morning AND night, it’s also good, except it is more expensive.  :)

It is recommended to be consumed within 2-3 weeks to ensure freshness.

Defrost, microwave or steam it and serve.  It can be served cool, at room temperature or warm depending on your dog's preference.

We will talk more about the menu for meat in the next few entries.  ;D

Home-Cooked Food VS Raw Food Diet

Before we started home-cooking for our dog, we were seriously considering about giving our doggie raw food diet after he kept having skin flare-ups while on kibbles.

We were thinking about commercially-developed raw food but were quite sceptical if the food could have been mishandled at any point during the transportation from overseas to Singapore, or from the suppliers to the pet shops, we just feel insecure about it.  Anyway in the end, our Turbo helped us make the decision.  As a close couple friends of ours are feeding their dog with the raw food diet, they gave us a few nuggets of it to try feeding Turbo, to see if he likes it.  For your info, Turbo is not a picky dog at all and he eats almost anything.  However, when we served him the raw nuggets, he smelled it, licked it and then went away, not wanting to eat it at all.  We have never seen him reject food like this.  Actually we also didn’t like the smell, it smelled very fishy somehow.  No offence to anyone feeding your dog the raw food diet.

So then another question is whether we want to just buy raw salmon and give him, or we cook it for him.  I heard that when you feed raw salmon, they can start to smell very fishy and salmony all over their body.  Also I am not sure about bacteria in the salmon cos you know for us humans if we have salmon sashimi, it must be the really really fresh kind, so we were not so comfortable giving the raw salmon we get from supermarkets or wet markets.  Even if we are ok to give the raw salmon, it will have to be the more expensive kinds so that it is really fresh.  We then decided to cook the salmon as well as other vegetables for Turbo and see if his skin improves.  It really did and his skin condition is so much stabilised now as you can see from the pictures in the previous post.

We also took into consideration for the pricing.  Although it is not cheap to give home-cooked diet, moreover if you also take into consideration the time involved in preparing the food, it is what we feel is the best for our dog that helped us make the decision for insisting on home-cooked food.  According to this close couple friends of ours, they told us that they give their dog at least 8 nuggets of the commercial raw food a day (morning and night) and each nugget costs about $1, which makes the cost of her meal to about $8 at least in a day.

Our home-cooked food for breakfast probably costs about $1 (oats plus sweet potatoes / apples / bananas) and for dinner about $5.50 to $6.50, depending on what type meat you choose.  This comes up to about $6.50 to $7.50 in a day.  It is cheaper than raw food diet and what is more important is that it definitely smells and tastes so much nicer.  You can imagine yourself eating your dog’s home-cooked food as they are all made from human grade ingredients but you cannot imagine yourself eating the raw nuggets right?  At least seeing that our Turbo enjoys his home-cooked food so much makes us really happy and all the hard work is definitely worth it.    ;D

Quoted from http://animals.howstuffworks.com/pets/how-to-care-for-a-dog3.htm :

Avoid Raw Foods

You'd think things like raw meat and eggs would be more "natural" for a dog's diet.  After all, his cousins, the wolves and coyote, eat their food raw.  But domestication has made our dogs' digestive systems a little more sensitive.  Raw meat, poultry, and eggs may contain bacteria -- such as salmonella -- that can make your dog very sick, so it's best to always serve these foods cooked.  In addition, raw egg whites interfere with the absorption of biotin, one of the B-vitamins.

Home-Cooked Food for Dogs with Skin Problems

Turbo’s skin had been well eversince when he was a puppy until he was 2+ years old, about half a year after spaying him.  It got better after some medications but kept coming back again and again throughout these 4 years, the time between one flare-up and another was also getting shorter and shorter.  He was on anti-biotics at times when he got really bad flare-ups, good thing is that he reacted well to steroid cream but it is not good for him to take too much steroids, it made him thirsty and have bald patches, and it only treats the symptoms but not the root of the problem.  So these 4 years he has been having skin problems on an on-off basis but it never really go away.  In fact, it got worse last year and we were applying cream for him a few days a week, then it got better for a few days and started coming back again.  The constant cream-applying drills, days and nights on the e-collar, and the cream/ointments on him is making our floor very oily and sticky (btw, we are clean freaks!), it’s just so sad and heart-breaking to see him suffering and itching like this.  =(

See how inflamed they could become, he must be feeling terribly uncomfortable.  :(

We also brought him to do food allergy testing but it showed he wasn’t allergic to any food apparently, which is uncommon.  We were really helpless.  We thought he might be allergic to something in the environment, so we bought a S$500+ Air Ionizer which is said to help reduce the allergens in the air, which might have helped a little, we are not sure, but no harm trying.  We also started to shower him more frequently to keep him clean, which was recommended by a doctor during one of his visits to the vet.  As much as we can, we would shower him every day or every alternate day with water and twice a week with the medicated shampoo, we then slowly stopped the medicated shampoo and used an organic Neem oil shampoo instead (this one we are using smells pretty nice, not smelly at all).  We think the frequent showering does help to keep him clean so as to avoid environmental allergens even though it’s a lot of work, but it does not exactly prevent flare-ups.

We also thought he might be allergic to the preservatives used in Dog kibbles and snacks if the food allergy test is hmm... accurate?  So we decided to start him on a home-cooked diet where we know exactly what he eats.  Usually they are ok with most veges, so it was mainly the meat we were closely monitoring.  After about one month of home-cooked diet, his skin has improved tremendously!  We realised we were not applying cream and ointments for him anymore and he wasn’t licking his body already.  I continued with the home-cooked diet for a few months or coming to half a year now and his skin is so nice and stable now.  His coat is also getting denser and he doesn’t seem to shed as much anymore.  You can also rest assured if you order our home-cooked diet because our own dog is taking the exact same food.  ;D

Cheeky Turbo showing off his good skin for photo-taking, kekeke!  ;P

See the difference!  Even the old scars are gone!  =D

We still give Turbo doggie treats but we are very selective what to give him.  We try to only give him those all natural or organic ones or those freeze-dried from original food kind, so no preservatives, usually those only have less than 5 ingredients kind, so he still gets to enjoy treats!  Sometimes we just give him fresh raw vegetables like celery and carrots to chew on or some fresh fruits like blueberries (anti-oxidants good for skin) or papayas (heard from a friend that it’s good for the skin), even better than commercial snacks!  Fresh and natural!  Try that!  ;P

We hope that your dog will also benefit from our home-cooked diet, actually we would also be happy if your dog benefits from your own home-cooked diet, what is important is the dogs are healthy and happy.  ;D
